Inspired by the myriad qualities of light in environments where earth, sky and water interplay, Fierro expresses his reverence for these transition zones.

Through an involved process of canvas preparation where marble dust is adhered in layers, the pre-painted surface is reminiscent of a rough and craggy cave wall. Oil paint is built up and removed, creating an understory of activity, lending a degree of poignancy to the finished composition.

The completed painting is as much a reflection of the effect from the paint on the surface as the intended image itself. This process of painting on a stone-based surface is a natural progression in Fierro's work following fifteen years of sculpting granite.
